Cloud Storage Solutions – How to know the Best

A novice in the field of data storage has to learn about cloud storage solutions.  Cloud storage solutions are providers of backup solutions for online data.  The process involves storing and accessing data from a cloud.  A cloud is the multiple and connected resources available in each provider.

According to webopedia, there are four (4) types of cloud storage namely, personal, public, private and hybrid.  Personal cloud storage refers to the provider of server space for individuals where they can store data, photos, videos and other files, also known as mobile cloud storage.  Public cloud storage refers to the online or utility storage on a pay-per-use basis, also known as storage-as-a-service.  Private cloud storage is identical with public cloud storage.  A hybrid cloud storage, on one hand, combines the functionality of public and private cloud storages and are accessed using Web services API framework or cloud applications.

But how do you know the best?  What criteria do business organizations have to consider in choosing the best cloud storage solution?

All cloud storage solution providers claim the same high availability.  It is normal to have a sales pitch that one cloud storage is better than the rest. It is understandable that they market beyond the actual capability.  There is a way to check each provider, though.  Scroll down to know.

  • Greater accessibility and reliability

Check if provider offers unlimited storage and that files can be accessed anytime anywhere, and even by using mobile phones including iOS, Android and Windows Phone.  Also, check if there are remote backups of data and if data restore is available.

  • Rapid deployment, scalability, and durability

Check if files can be readily and securely shared and controlled when you pick a certain provider.

Check cloud sync capabilities, the range of resources and hosted applications. Check if it also stores multiple copies necessarily across multiple locations.  Also, check if data is safeguarded with automatic checksums to ensure data integrity.  Finally, check if it can support and handle big applications.

  • Strong protection for back up, documentation and recovery from disasters. Check if backup of a particular cloud storage provider is automated. Check if provider automatically backs up in real time documents, photos, music and videos stored on a user’s computer, even in cases of disasters, or when there is a need for high-level data security. Also, check archival capability.
  • Lower overall storagecosts

Ensure provider guarantees that you only need to pay for the storage you used.  Check costs versus size of storage.  Calculate how much energy consumption is cut choosing a particular plan of a cloud storage provider.  Check for free cloud storage solutions that can be used for a limited time to be able to decide further.

There are, among other things, important considerations in choosing a cloud storage solution.  Be it for personal, business, or enterprise use, it has to be tailored accordingly not only to your needs but also to your budget.
